FAQ

Why choose SharpScribe over another virtual medical scribe company?

We have best-in-class scribes, all located in North America. We DO NOT offshore scribes. All scribes are medical school graduates, and we assign “backup” scribes to each physician, so the physician is always covered.

What is a medical scribe?

A medical scribe is a trained professional that gathers data during patient visits and documents it in the EMR. They are becoming increasingly popular because their assistance greatly increases physician efficiency and patient throughput. This empowers doctors to provide cost-effective, quality medical care without compromising the doctor-patient relationship.

With which EHRs do you work?

We work with all EHRs.

Do medical scribes code and bill the chart?

Medical scribes can “pend” and attach diagnosis codes to each encounter. The physician will always dictate which CPT code(s) and diagnoses to attach. Each scribe is trained on the proper protocol for each individual physician. Every note is still reviewed by the physician prior to submission or finalizing for billing.

Can scribes enter orders?

Scribes can “pend” orders for physicians to accept and execute. SharpScribe enables clients to decide whether they would like their scribes to pend orders.

Do you need a license to be a Medical Scribe?

No—scribes are not required to be certified or licensed by a third-party licensing organization. The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) do, however, offer guidelines outlining proper use of scribes. Our curriculum covers HIPAA compliance and knowledge of the appropriate medical terminology necessary to thoroughly document patient visits.

What are medical scribes prevented from doing?

Scribes do not engage in any form of direct patient care. Typically, scribes are trained to document SOAP notes, retrieve medicals records and perform other helpful clerical tasks.

What happens if a medical scribe calls in sick?

SharpScribe assigns two scribes per provider—a primary scribe, plus a backup. This ensures the healthcare provider is always covered.

How do you comply with HIPAA?

Our Number 1 priority is to ensure all of our scribes are well versed on HIPAA Laws and the standards set forth by the HITECH Act of 2009.

What regions of the country does SharpScribe service?

SharpScribe provides service for providers in more than a dozen states.
